Moesia
Destination "Moesia” for wine and culinary tourism is a part of the North Bulgarian Viticultural Region, Dunabian Plain.
A dry sunny region, it has a temperate continental climate. Annual rainfall is about 600mm. The area produces excellent dry white wines, naturally sparkling wines using traditional technology, high-quality red wines with rich, fruity flavors. The region’s signature variety is the spicy Gamza, although most red varieties do well. The Rubin variety originated here.
Here the
traditions of viticulture and winemaking are highly respected, and some of the
oldest and largest winemaking centers in the country are in this region - those
in Russe, Svishtov, Oryahovo and historical city of Pleven with the Wine
Museum, Aleksander Stamboliyski vocational winemaking school (established in 1890),
and the National Institute of Viticulture and Enology.
