Here the traditions of viticulture and winemaking are highly respected, and some of the oldest and largest winemaking centers in the country are in this region - those in Russe, Svishtov, Oryahovo and historical city of Pleven with the Wine Museum, Aleksander Stamboliyski vocational winemaking school (established in 1890), and the National Institute of Viticulture and Enology.
