Agios Athanasios is a small town in the Prefecture of Drama and the
Municipality of Doxato, located 13 km southeast of Drama. Its original name was
"Boriani" which refers to "Voirani" the oldest as it is
believed to be the name of the settlement which is probably associated with
noise, the "voi"-the sound- from the flow of water to the homonymous sources.
Its inhabitants are mostly refugees Pontians, Thracians and Asia Minors.
