The Struma Valley
Destination "The Struma Valley" for wine and culinary tourism is a part of the Bulgarian Southwest Viticultural Region.
This Bulgarian region in the southwestern corner of the country has an arid, Mediterranean climate quite distinct from other Bulgarian wine-growing areas. It’s the warmest wine-growing area of the country. The growing season is from early April to early November, and the mean temperature in July is 25°. Red varieties dominate here, and the most widely planted variety is the unique Bulgarian Broad Leaved Vine of Melnik (Shiroka Melnishka). The local wines are characterized by full taste, with spicy southern tones. Local winemakers nurture local indigenous varieties and some of the international grapes such as Chardonnay, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, and even Italian Sangiovese and Nebbiolo. There’s a lot to explore and experience here.
