Western Thrace
Destination "Western Thrace" for wine and culinary tourism is a part of the Bulgarian West Thracian Valley Viticultural Region.
A large wine-growing region drained by the Maritsa River, the Thracian Valley is home to the spicy red Mavrud grape. Most of Bulgaria’s well-known wineries are located in the Western Thrace and especially around Plovdiv.
The soils of this region are highly varied, but cinnamon soils are predominant. These are reddish colored (due to high iron content), calcareous and sandy clays that contribute natural, earthy notes to the wines.
