Discover Italy
Italy is situated in the South of Europe and it is one of the european natural regions easy to distinguish, given its sea and land borders: the Alps that connect Italy to Central Europe.
Italy confines with France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia and it is surrounded by different seas: Ligure, Tyrrenian, Ionian, Adriatic and Mediterranean. Italy is a peninsula comprehending also two of the most important island of the Mediterranean sea: Sicily and Sardinia.
Italy is not only the most famous peninsula in the world: it is an ancient land with an important historical background, in which populations from every corner of Europe established, melting each other and giving birth to an unique cultural identity.
Italian territory is mountainous and hilly, it is characterised by the Alps and the Apennines, while the biggest level ground is Padana. Given the vast latitude extension of the peninsula, weather circumstances are variable depending on the area. There are three different kind of climate: mountainous, continental and mediterranean. The first one is characterised by temperature variations with rainy and snowy falls. The continental climate, typical of Padana level ground, is characterised by several rainfalls in spring and autumn, less during summer and winter with a high level of humidity. Mediterranean climate is characterised by the influence of the sea and it could be hot and dry in summer and moisture in winter with rainfalls.
